We deserve a safer community
Yet again, Glen Waverley and Mt Waverley residents have suffered from some of the biggest increases in crime in Victoria.
Since the election of the Andrews Labor Government, crime has increased in the suburb of Mt Waverley by 66%, whilst crime in the suburb of Glen Waverley has increased by 18% (source – Crime Statistics Agency Victoria 31/12/14 to 31/12/17).
These statistics are consistent with the stories of theft and vandalism I regularly hear from local residents, small business owners and community groups.
As a local resident and your State Member of Parliament, I’m enormously concerned by such large increases in crime. Not only do these crime figures show our community is less safe today, they also represent real victims of crime; residents whose lives have been changed forever.
As your State Member of Parliament, I have campaigned strongly against the cuts to our local police services, which have reduced public safety. Since the election of the Andrews Labor Government:
- The Mt Waverley Police station has gone from opening 7am to 11pm 7 days a week, to now just opening 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Even worse, police resources have been cut so severely in our area that some weeks, it is not even able to open during the day Monday to Friday;
- Until the election of the Andrews Labor Government, Victoria Police Protective Services Officers staffed all train stations in Glen Waverley and Mt Waverley for all train services after 6pm. This initiative greatly increased safety for residents using train services and walking to their cars. Under the Andrews Labor Government, Victoria Police Protective Services Officers have been removed from 50% of train stations in Glen Waverley and Mt Waverley during night network train services; and
- Bail laws and sentencing laws have been weakened.
I’ve regularly spoken out against these changes, both in State Parliament and in our local community, and will continue to fight to have the cuts to local police services and weaker bail and sentencing laws reversed.
To ensure that I’m best placed to advocate for practical improvements to public safety, email me anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to discuss any public safety issues of concern to our community.
