Traffic congestion in Waverley has been eased with the Liberal Nationals Coalition Government delivering on its election commitment to upgrade the key intersection of High Street and Stephensons Roads Mt Waverley.
As part of the recent state budget, the Coalition funded the upgrade of this intersection, including the installation of a right turn arrow for west bound traffic on High Street Road. Thereafter VicRoads commenced the upgrade to deliver on the Coalition Government’s election commitment.
Immediately following the May state budget, I made extensive representations to the Minister for Transport to have the High Street and Stephensons Roads intersection upgraded as a priority.
The fact that the project received such a high priority, again demonstrates the Coalition Government’s commitment to deliver every one of our election commitments for Waverley, as soon as practical during this parliamentary term.
The previous intersection was inadequate to meet increasing traffic levels including traffic turning onto Stephensons Road from High Street Road.
This intersection is vital for Waverley residents turning onto Stephensons Road from High Street Road accessing Avila College, Holy Family Primary School, Mt Waverley Secondary and Mt Waverley Village. Prior to the upgrade, through traffic on High Street Road was blocked whilst right turning traffic banked up waiting to access Stephensons Road.
This upgrade provides a full right turn arrow from High Street Road to ensure both through traffic and right turn traffic at this intersection flows smoothly.
The upgrade will also reduce the incidence of lane changing, dramatically improving safety for motorists.
At the recent state election the Liberal Nationals Coalition committed to upgrade this intersection, including the installation of new traffic signals, during this parliamentary term. However within just seven months of coming to office the Coalition has not only funded and delivered our election commitment, we have also installed full turn traffic sequences to better manage traffic flows.
This is just another example of the Coalition Government over delivering on its election commitments for Waverley.
