Mount Waverley North Primary School rebuilding program

August 25th, 2011 posted by

I’m happy to announce that the Mt Waverley North Primary student rebuilding program has been saved through a $1 million grant by the Liberal Nationals Coalition Government.

Following the million dollar plus budget blowout of the BER student building renovation,  the School community was set to be left  with a part finished building, after the Federal Government refused to  fund the completion of the building renovation. In order to resolve the problem and ensure the BER student building is completed, the Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will contribute $1 million to complete the building at Mt Waverley North Primary School.

The extra funding means that the school can now complete its planned extension and renovation of two old classroom blocks into four modern state-of-the-art and open-plan flexible learning areas. Without the extra funding the school would only have been able to complete part of this project.

The reallocation of the Coalition’s $1 million state election commitment to the BER student building was requested by the School community after it was clear the Federal Government would not cover their million dollar plus BER budget blowout.

Since being elected in November last year, I have met with the School community and worked with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) to resolve this terrible situation.

I would like to pay credit to the School Community and Education Minister Martin Dixon for working through this incredibly difficult situation to ensure students were not left with a half-finished BER building.

This solution will ensure that Mt Waverley North Primary School has been able to complete a refurbishment of student teaching areas in a very tight state budget.

The allocation of these funds complements the implementation of the Coalition’s other major education election commitment to increase funding to non-government school students to 25 per cent of the recurrent cost of educating a student in a government school.

The Coalition remains focussed on building the competitive strengths of our education system in Waverley by funding the upgrades of the future at Mt Waverley North, Essex Heights and Pinewood Primary whilst providing continuing support for non-government schools.
