Recently I joined the Hon. David Davis Minister for Health and world renowned cardiologist Prof Ian Meredith to unveil a new catheter lab at Victoria’s premier cardiac service, MonashHeart.
The Medical Equipment Replacement Program is a key way that the Government supports health services, such as Southern Health, to replace equipment that is ageing. Under this program in 2011-2012, $35 million was allocated for replacement of the highest priority items for acute services in public hospitals across the state. Of this amount, Southern Health was allocated $1.1 million to replace the ageing catheter laboratory at MonashHeart with a new, improved model.
The $1.1 million lab will see more than 1,000 highly specialised and life-saving cardiac procedures a year. The full range of cardiac procedures will be performed in this lab and include Pacemaker implantation, defibrillator implantation, left heart catheterisation, coronary angioplasty and aortic heart valve replacement.
Families in Melbourne’s south east will now have even better access to world class cardiac services and state of the art equipment.
MonashHeart is Victoria’s largest provider of acute cardiac services, treating more heart attack patients than any other service. Staff and patients having access to the best possible technology is essential to continue to provide and receive exceptional care.
