Monash residents share in reductions of more than $30 million for summer electricty bills

The Victorian Coalition Government will deliver on an election commitment by providing eligible Monash residents with discounts on electricity bills this summer, as part of an estimated $30 million in discounts on summer electricity bills to Victorian pensioners and other eligible concession card holders.

Monash residents who hold pensioner concession cards, health care cards or Veterans’ gold cards are now eligible for a 17.5% year round discount on their electricity bills, representing the most generous electricity concession offered by any state government in Australia.

Prior to March 2011, the electricity concession only covered the six months of the year over the winter period. However under this initiative, eligible Monash residents have access to electricity concessions 12 months of the year, including during the hot summer months.

This change will give additional comfort to pensioners and other concession card holders, knowing they are eligible for and receiving financial assistance to run air-conditioning and other cooling.

During last summer – the first covered by the year-round electricity concessions– the government provided more than $28.7 million in concessions (excluding GST). Projections for this summer suggest that the concession amount will top $30 million and be paid to approximately 800,000 households.
