MOLOTOV cocktails thrown onto the Monash Freeway overnight forced motorists to swerve around them at high speed, before a house was also targeted.
The four bottles were thrown about 400m east of Springvale Rd at about midnight, causing a grassfire on the edge of the freeway that firefighters were called on to put out.
Vehicles travelling outbound had to swerve to miss the flaming bottles.
Police believe two of the Molotov cocktails were thrown from a footbridge over the freeway and the other two thrown over a fence from Brandon Park Drive.
At 12.50am, another flaming bottle was thrown at a house in Glen Tower Drive, in Glen Waverley, where the resident woke to a loud smashing sound and went outside to find a small fire outside his bedroom at the front of the house.
The man was able to put out the fire with a garden hose before calling police.
Anyone with information or who noticed any suspicious activity should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Meanwhile, commuters face traffic chaos on the Monash Freeway this morning after a pile-up involving up to 12 cars.
