Latest crime statistics obtained under Freedom of Information (FOI) for the Mount Waverley Electorate, confirm crime has continued to escalate under the Brumby Government.

Crime statistics by postcode for the Mount Waverley electorate show that from 2004/05 to 2008/09:

  • total crime has increased by 33.2 per cent in Glen Waverley/Wheelers Hill (3150);
  • crimes against the person have increased by 17 per cent in Mount Waverley/Pinewood/Syndal (3149) and 13.4 per cent in Glen Waverley/Wheelers Hill;
  • crimes against the property have increased by 43.1 per cent in Glen Waverley/Wheelers Hill;
  • rape has increased by 33.3 per cent in Mount Waverley/Pinewood/Syndal;
  • robbery has increased by 94.1 per cent in Glen Waverley/Wheelers Hill; and
  • assault has increased by 34.1 per cent in Mount Waverley/Pinewood/Syndal and 18.2 per cent in Glen Waverley/Wheelers Hill.

Whilst crime continues to soar, Monash remains 111 officers short according to the Police Association of Victoria and Mt Waverley police station is not able to open as scheduled due to officer shortages.
Policing is a basic responsibility of state government, and after 11 years in government, it’s simply not good enough public safety is being put at risk by Brumby Government police cuts. Brumby Government Minister and Waverley MP Maxine Morand should have stood up against these cuts and actually represented the interests of Waverley residents.
